In short, OLED stands for “organic light-emitting diode.” OLED displays are made up of tiny LED lights that can be individually controlled. This gives them a number of advantages over traditional LCD displays.
Brightness and Contrast Ratio
One of the most notable advantages of OLED displays is their unparalleled brightness and contrast ratio. OLED pixels emit their own light, which means that they can achieve perfect blacks. That’s in contrast (no pun intended) to LCDs, which have a backlight that shines through a layer of liquid crystals. That backlight inevitably bleeds into the dark areas of an image, resulting in less-than-perfect blacks.
The second half of the brightness and contrast equation is brightness. And here again, OLEDs have the edge over LCDs. Because each pixel can emit its own light, OLEDs can get incredibly bright—much brighter than LCDs. In fact, Samsung’s latest OLED TVs can hit peak brightness levels of around 1,000 nits. To put that into perspective, most LCD TVs top out at around 300 nits.
Another area where OLEDs shine is color accuracy. Thanks to their self-emitting nature, OLEDs are able to display a wider range of colors than LCDs. They also have better color accuracy since they don’t require a backlight. This makes them ideal for watching HDR content, which relies on accurate color reproduction to look its best.
If you’ve ever watched an LCD TV from an angle, you know that the image quality deteriorates quite rapidly as you move away from dead center. That’s because LCD pixels tend to wash out when viewed from an angle. OLED pixels, on the other hand, maintain their intensity regardless of viewing angle. So whether you’re watching directly in front of the TV or off to the side, you’ll always get a great picture.
