Guilty Crown Plot
The series is set in the near future in Japan, ten years after the start of the “Apocalypse Virus” pandemic. The outbreak of the unidentified “Apocalypse Virus” had turned 80% of the human race into “the Lost,” creatures with a ravenous hunger for human flesh. In order to ensure their survival and protect their sanity, “the lost” aggregate into huge walled-off areas called “Gates” where they live off one another as food sources. In return for giving up their names and being inducted into “Gates”, survivors are given an ID number which allows them to claim rations from food distribution centers.
To combat the Gates, each major city has its own military quarantine force called GHQ. Rather than annihilating The Lost in mass numbers like conventional warfare, GHQ uses special troops known as “Undertakers”, whose purpose is to extract powerful beings called voids from within The Lost which are then used by GHQ’s supercomputer known as “ザ·システム (The System)” to pacify The Lost. Each void is unique to its user and can range from simple objects such as baseballs and swords to complicated weaponry and gigantic mecha.
The story follows Shu Ouma, a high school student who unintentionally obtains an ability called the Power of the Kings (王の力 Ō no Chikara) which allows him to remove Voids from other people. After Shu meets Inori Yūki, a member of a resistance organization called Funeral Parlor, he joins their struggle against GHQ in order to save humanity from becoming lost forever. However, as Shu uses his power more frequently, he realizes that his conscience starts deteriorating at an accelerated rate due to his reliance on others’ Voids instead of fighting with his own strength. Worse yet, he begins seeing visions of death related to those he has saved using his power which compels him even further along this dark path. As these events transpire, the struggle between GHQ and Funeral Parlor turns out to be just one piece of a much larger puzzle that will change everything Shu thought he knew about himself, The Lost, Void users, and even reality itself.
